Growing orchids has been discouraged for many years. They reason varies, but it is often because the beautiful flowers are expensive and require a little more work than your average house plant.

If you are currently growing orchids in your home or would like to start then there is still some information to learn.  Orchids are actually easier to care for then you may have been lead to believe.

Orchids require a different type of soil than other plants. They need bark and similar substances like that to thrive.  They also are not direct sunlight type of flowers, but they do need sunlight to stay healthy.

Watering orchids is easy to do and important.  They need plenty of water. The best way to make sure they get the water they need is to water them until water seeps out the bottom of their pot.  That should be good for about a week.

Orchids like humidity, but they also like air movement. This may sound like an oxymoron, but they will do better if you have a ceiling fan on in the room they are in. Every morning it is a good practice to spray their leaves with water, especially in the summer.  They don’t need to be soaked, but just a nice gentle mist will suffice.

Orchids will do better if the temperature stays within a range of 60-82 and this includes night. If they will fall outside of this range, do what you can to bring the temperature back within the range.  They may not shrivel up, but they will suffer and have trouble growing.
